Walkers take to the Harbour Bridge to support those living with mental illness
The Wellness Walk returns to Sydney for its fifth year
As part of Mental Health Month, Sydneysiders whose lives are touched by mental illness will take to the Sydney Harbour foreshore on 15 October for theWellness Walk: A Bridge Walk for Mental Health. The event aims to raise awareness and much-needed funds for mental health services and advocacy in New South Wales.
The event is hosted by One Door Mental Health, a not-for-profit mental health service provider, and offers a choice of two walks. The 5.9km walk across the Sydney Harbour Bridge, starts and finishes in the beautiful grounds of Government House. The 2km mini-walk is around the grounds of the Royal Botanic Garden, Sydney. After the walk, participants are invited to enjoy post-event refreshments and activities including live music, face painting and a range of other family activities.
One Door Mental Health CEO Rob Ramjan says the event is a great way to show support and raise money for people living with mental illness and their families.
“There is a great deal of research to show that walking is not only great for your physical health but for your mental health too. The Wellness Walk is a fantastic opportunity to get out in the fresh air and get some exercise while showing your support for people living with all mental illnesses,” said Rob.
Rob also says that getting together for an event like the Wellness Walk encourages people to talk about mental health and reduce stigma.
“As a community we’re making fantastic headway in reducing the stigma around depression and anxiety but we still have a long way to go with other conditions such as schizophrenia, bipolar disorder and personality disorders.”
It’s a fantastic family day out so visit www.wellnesswalk.org.au and register now.
Sunday 15 October 2017 - 10:00 am - Government House, Sydney.
Participants are also encouraged to set up a fundraising page so family and friends can donate to One Door Mental Health, Flourish Australia or Mental Health Carers NSW.
