SYDNEYSIDERS BRIDGE THE GAP BETWEEN STIGMA AND UNDERSTANDING
21 October 2018
Thousands of Sydneysiders stepped out on Sunday 21 October to help bridge the gap between stigma and understanding of mental health at this year’s Wellness Walk.
The sixth annual Wellness Walk was held in the beautiful grounds of Government House, Sydney. The event was comprised of two different distances; a 2km mini-walk around the Royal Botanic Gardens and a 5.9km walk over Sydney Harbour Bridge and back.
The Wellness Walk is an awareness raising exercise for Mental Health Month and also operates as a fundraiser to support essential services for people living with mental illness.
At the start and finish line in the grounds of Government House, walkers enjoyed the Wellness Festival including live music from Elly-May Barnes and James Van Cooper, mental health resource stands, lawn games, jumping castles, face painting and a sausage sizzle. Plus, we got the pleasure of having the Invictus Games Sydney in town. Premier partner Sage and family and friends of the Invictus Games joined walkers to show understanding and support for those living with mental illness, in particular, our service men and women who often suffer in silence with these invisible injuries.
October is coming to an end. This Wednesday marks one month of people all over Australia coming together to support each other, raise awareness and break the stigma associated with mental illness as a part of Mental Health Month. The Wellness Walk was a great way to wrap up the events for 2018.
The Wellness Walk is the creation of Larry Smith. Larry started up the Wellness Walk across the Sydney Harbour Bridge after going to New York and participating in the NAMI Walks over the Brooklyn Bridge in support of mental health and fighting stigma. The NAMI Walk now takes place in more than 80 locations across the USA with more than 50,000 taking part. The NAMI walk has grown exponentially, ours is just beginning.
