What is the Wellness Walk?

The Wellness Walk is a yearly event taking in the Sydney Harbour Bridge, with the finishing line at Government House to enjoy the celebratory Wellness Festival!

It’s a family friendly walk with an easy route suitable for all ages & abilities. The walk raises awareness for mental illness & encourages walking as a way to improve mental wellness.

This a wonderful event brings together people from all walks of life in a positive, active and fun environment because together we make a difference.

Why Walk Across Sydney Harbour Bridge?

Crossing Sydney Harbour Bridge signifies bridging the gap by moving from stigma to understanding. Gathering together shows community support, union and care to anyone who is suffering. The act of walking reflects that living with mental illness is a step-by-step, one-step-at-a-time process.

What Are The Health Benefits Of Walking?

Walking provides incredible health benefits like feel-good endorphins to reduce depression, stress and anxiety. Feelings of isolation and loneliness are banished by walking with a friend or a group. 

Walking boosts circulation and helps lower blood pressure. It loosens stiff joints and eases muscle tension.  It lowers the risk of heart disease, tones the body and keeps weight in check.

Walking helps manage osteoporosis and improves balance and coordination. It even provides vitamin D if you walk in the sunshine. Wow! All that just from walking!

Why Take Part?

We all go through tough times & we all know it’s the love and support of family and friends that lifts us up & makes all the difference. Mental illness is a tough time experienced by 1 in 5 Australians, so chances are someone in your life is doing it tough. They may live openly with mental illness or be suffering quietly. For some people it’s one episode. For others it’s a severe and life-long challenge.

Although mental illness itself is not life threatening around 15% of people affected by mental illness die by suicide. Currently government funding provides assistance for only half of the support and care needed in the community for mental health services.

Open discussion creates understanding for those who suffer. By taking the time for the Wellness Walk, you are taking a stand that helps create space for more understanding. The more we understand the more compassionate we are, the better the lives of all those affected.
